Smurf, Dolphin, and JOHN PEEL.
Reviews coming this month 26/05/04
Coming
up this month will be reviews of
~ Bonkers - The John Peel session
This has to be the cheapest Bonkers Cd at £1.99, unless
you're buying a dogeared Bonkers 3 from the market.
This features DJ Hixxy's mix as heard on national Radio courtesy of
John Peel, and is available only in UK HMV stores!!
~ Armin Van Buuren's new CD set
Another quality Trance release from React records. Just check
back over React's release history, everything they've done is in the
name of quality, even the early Technohead CDs!
~ 808 State's first album '808:90'
I've only heard 'Pacific State', 'Cubik' and 'In Yer Face'
so listening to some of their really early stuff should be great. Included
'Pacific 202', an early 'Pacific State'.
In the meatime I reccomend Bonkers 12, and Ratpack - the History

Record Review - 'DJ Kurt - Rock Ya Hardcore'
I
heard this one first on Sy & Unknown's Radio 1 mix, and then was
pleased to discover it on Bonkers 12. As soon as USH announced
it's release I was all over it like a rash.
In true Quosh style, Rock Ya Hardcore is 100% bouncy, and is an
excellent demonstrator of the punchier, bouncier sound that is returning
to Hardcore akin to the early bouncy techno.
'Rock Ya Hardcore' has some simplistic synth breakdowns, with a wide
variety of different variations, and some excellent Quosh style
anticlimaxing.
Hat off to DJ Kurt who produced his track with a non professional setup.
10/10
It's
here- Bonkers 12!
Paul Garner's artwork is back!
Bonkers
12 has hit the shelf this time around with an extra mix from Breeze
& Styles to accompany Hixxy, Sharkey and Scott Brown.
Hixxy's mix is no dissapointment for the lovers of the euphoric
Hardcore, it's jam packed with uplifting melodies and certainly has a
harder feel than his Bonkers 10 mix! Sharkey's mix is brimming
with acid and 180BPM+ kicks, the hardest edges of Freeform brought
together by the style's pioneer.
It was the Scott Brown mix that I anticipated most and the Scottish
legend certainly delivered. Not only did he include my favourite track
at the moment 'Rock Ya Hardcore' by DJ Kurt, but he remembered to shove
a load of excellent Newstyle on at the end! His own 'Boomstick' with
it's frantic Gabba bass drum and the Dutch rantings of 'Alles Kapot' by
Evil Activities and & Neophyte (still haven't translated it!).
Finally, the Breeze & Styles mix. This is the first time Bonkers has
had a 4th disc, just like when Bonkers 3 introduced a third mix! I
reckon Breeze & Styles have made a good entrance to the series with
their fresh track selection. 'Torn' by Davied Pamies and Cesar
Benito is a definate top tune- see if you recognise the melody..
An overall summary- go out and buy this album- don't copy it because
then you aren't giving React any profits which they truly deserve!
Review
of 'Battle of the DJs Match 2'
The
second installment of this Beats 24-7 series is now here, featuring
two 18 track mixes.
On
disc 1, the RSR boys Ramos Supreme and Sunset Regime showcase their
favourite tracks
Starting off with some bassy but happy oldskool, the CD progresses through
some early Happy Hardcore and ends in some energetic Trancecore, with
highlights such as 'Organ Power' and Acid Sunshine'.
Disc 2 is mixed by Force & Styles. The well known duo kick off the
mix with some breakbeat Hardcore and a sinister bass track from Kev
Bird & J Smooth. The theme of the CD becomes more and more uplifting
as the tracks progress, and highlights include 'UR Everything' by Helix,
and 'Lets Fly' by Breeze.
This CD is above others in the way that the tracks it showcases are
not 100% tracks used on every other compilation. The use of some Trancecore
at the end of the RSR mix also shows another developing side to Hardcore
for firat time listeners to hear. 7/10
John
Peel is not enough
But
what about a two hour Hardcore show on Radio 1? All of the Bonkers boys
and more, including Kev Energy, Whizzkid and Unknown played 8- three
track sets.
The night kicked off with Jon Doe of CLSM playing some Freeform and Hard
Acid Drum Core, followed by Dougal and his trademark vocal
anthems. This was shortly followed by the expected hard set from
the godfather Scott Brown, playing some bouncy stuff and Dutch Gabba...
mmm, hard! Scott was followed by trance styles of Hixxy. Also playing
were Brisk & Ham with some dark tunes, Sharkey and Energy with
cutting edge Freeform, Bonkers 12 bonus mixers Breeze & Styles, and
the night finished off with some bouncy tracks from Sy & Unknown-
with the godfather Sy scratching!
The show highlighted the massive variances between different Hardcore
sounds, from the bouncy to the dark, and the vocal to the well, Gabba!
You can find more info on the show and for a limited period, listen to
the show at www.bbc.co.uk

Every
Hardcore listener knows who DJ Sy is- the cofounder of Quosh Records
and one of if not the best DJs on the scene, or any other for that matter.
Since his beginnings mixing Electro Hip Hop in the 1980s, Sy has released
over 60 tracks and each has been a gem.
